Chillon castle constructed on a rocky islet on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva, is listed as a historic monument in Switzerland, and is without doubt one of the most popular in this country, not only for its preservation and architectural value, but also by the incomparable beauty of its surroundings.
Surrounded by the Alps and his profile reflected in the waters of the lake, is one of the best pictures that a traveler can bring.
Located in a strategic place to control traffic between northern and southern Europe, was the residence of the Counts of Savoy throughout the Middle Ages, but his fame reached the jail that housed in the basement and some of his famous prisoners, as Lord Bayron, who went on to record his name in a column and later wrote the poem “The Prisoner of Chillon.”
As an authentic medieval castle is bound to earth by a covered bridge to replace the drawbridge, to cross the moat that surrounds it.
Once inside (after payment of the entry), and if it is winter, I delight in a Glühwein, a typical drink at that time also in countries like Germany and Austria, and consists of hot red wine flavored with spices.
It can take guided tours. You have to follow a schedule to travel across the basement that served in prison, secret passages, great halls, chambers, rooms, patios and can climb to the defense towers overlooking the lake which invite contemplation. Enjoy! (more…)
