Trekking in El Chalten, Patagonia

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

With its beautiful scenery and the view spectacular glaciers of Mt. Fitz Roy, El Chalten offers some of the best opportunities for trekking in Patagonia.
Los Glaciares National Park in southern Argentina is a fantastic place to experience snow-capped mountains, magnificent glaciers, sparkling rivers and glacial lakes. Many people access to the north of the park from the city of El Calafate to visit the famous Perito Moreno glacier. While this is an incredible sight to see, on the south side of the park is the place to go for incredible hiking opportunities. Trekking in El Chalten is a very small town at the southern end of Los Glaciares National Park. It takes about three hours to get there by bus from El Calafate. This is El Chalten that avid hikers and nature lovers come to year after year to truly live the beauty of Patagonia. Perhaps the best thing about hiking in El Chalten is that it’s all free! While there is an entrance fee to Parque Nacional Los Glaciares El Calafate when you come from, there are no tickets to El Chalten. The trails are well marked and easy to follow, so there is no need guidance. Because the city of El Chalten is small, the slopes are within walking distance of most accommodation. (more…)
